Two installations of single channel video present two of the many, varied viewing experiences Target has engaged in over the decades. The first is a large wall projection surrounded by ephemera from the period. The second is a black room with a couch that plays only Black Flag videos. Yes, the TV party approach. Big Live Punk Show at MOCA in January, 2012

X, the Dead Kennedys and the Avengers will play a one night, "member's only" concert at Geffen/MOCA in downtown LA on January 28, 2012. The show's outside, and January's pretty cold in LA. Let's hope for good weather and a warm coat. It will be an outstanding night of classic punk!

Opening October 1, 2011 is a huge exhibit on California art mounted at Geffen/MOCA in Los Angeles. "Under the Big Black Sun: Art in California 1974-1981" will exhibit over 100 artists from California including TargetVideo77, Mark Pauline/SRL and our old friend, Bruce Connor. In April, 2011, Target Video will present hours of footage from its archive at the 2011 Sarasota International Film Festival in Sarasota, Florida. “Futility Is Resistance: Treasures for the Target Video Archive (1977-1984)” is spread across three evenings and the shows will represent several geographical areas: Los Angeles, New York and Europe and San Francisco. The shows will focus on bands and the activities Target was involved with during the art and punk music scene of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The shows will include legendary bands like the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and X with nugget treasures like Snuky Tate, Nash the Slash and John Cooper Clarke. Be there for three nights of feature length shows April 14 (Los Angeles) April 15 (NY/Europe) and April 16 (San Francisco.) Jennifer Egan's new, well reviewed novel, "A Visit from the Goon Squad," contains a chapter set in the 70's/80's San Francisco punk scene. The Mabuhay, the Mutants, Avengers, Sleepers, Dead Kennedys and more are mentioned. On page 35 of the hardback book, the novel mentions Joe Rees and Target Video. Very cool to be in a widely read novel. A pretty unexpected moment in my summer reading!

We'll be showing classic videos with a focus on LA bands in July as part of the "Don't Knock the Rock" music film festival. DNTR was created several years ago by Allison & Tiffany Anders. They do a terrific job of bringing the best music material on various formats to LA. Don't know what else they have in store this year, but we will be there!

Tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis' death. Back then no one could know this event would still be marked today or that so many fans of all ages would still spend hours listening to his music late into the night. Oh, yes, and there's the matter of all those "Unknown Pleasures" tshirts.

I remember being in the studio and hearing the news, devastating news. We'd all been looking forward to Joy Division's American tour. They were coming to San Francisco in June. The Dead Kennedys and the Mutants each were to get a slot opening for their shows. There was always anticipation for bands coming to town from Europe. Bands were usually known mostly by their music, or the odd interview one might catch in a fanzine. More often than not, the new music papers in the US (Slash, Damage, Search & Destroy, New York Rocker) didn't get their shot at interviewing foreign bands until they actually came to town, so not much was known locally beyond the music. Information was scant yet we knew something great was on its way.

Factory Records was a bit of a mystery to me at the time. They had great bands. Really great ones. Durutti Column. A Certain Ratio. Cabaret Voltaire. And they had Joy Division. It was never clear who was in charge, at least to me. I am sure there were others in town who were connected with the Factory people who would get the facts explained to them. For me that morning in the studio what I understood was that Curtis' mesmerizing voice was silent. The notion that Joy Division's arrival would lead to a surge of new music was not to be, at least in May, 1980.

Today Joy Division has hoards more fans and devotees than it ever did back then. Devotees who never saw Curtis perform or speak. That's the power of music and art, to compel interest and attention for the ages.

Now, here's a typical shot. Joe's shooting Black Flag in the studio. That's Chuck Dukowski on the left then Joe, then Mike Fox of the Tools, Sal Paradise of Code of Honor, Greg Gardiner and some kid I don't remember. Oh, and Henry Rollins up center with Greg Ginn just behind him. Black Flag shoots were a blast. Especially swift, the band would jam up in the van, play a gig, stay up and talk about shooting a video, maybe sleep, but probably just drink and cavort. The next day we'd shoot the band. They'd jump back in the van and drive back to LA. Real hit-and-run stuff. Now, actually, we knew when they were coming in advance but that was about it. They were very by-the-seat-of-you-pants guys, but always right on the dime when you turned on the cameras. We taped them many times with just about every singer they had. They were and are just the nicest, greatest guys. I know they have had their arguments or whatever with each other, and that I'm sorry to hear about, but they were always cool with us.

I guess it was with Black Flag that the Teen Idles first showed up at the warehouse. Another group of nice guys. Joe put them to work to earn their keep or something like that. They ended up building my loft space in the warehouse. All they wanted from me was Coca-Colas. Go figure. They could have asked me for anything and I would have given it, so happy was I to have a loft! They stayed in town for a while I think and probably played a show or two. That was how it was in SF, come to town, someone will put you up, put you to work and give you a show. I am know it was the same in LA, but the Target warehouse wasn't just a party house, it was like a community center where everyone worked as well as played.

On May 13, 1980 Joe left Target HQ for 3 weeks in NYC. He was off to see Jill who’d set up some shoots and probably a show. I’ll post more on that at a later date. The warehouse got a breather after weeks of activity and mayhem.

Cleaning the checkered, tiled floor always went faster with the great sounds blaring from our jukebox full of classics old and new. We always worked with music whether live, from the jukebox or projected video. It gave life to the cavernous brick studio. The jukebox was our own gem in the pre-streaming, pre-pandora days but like them, it was free. It was stocked with the greatest singles, and they were vinyl. Eddie Cochran, the Shirelles, the Specials, Black Flag, Gang of Four, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Avengers, the Dils, James Chance, Martha and the Vandellas, the Cramps, the Clash, James Brown, Gene Vincent, Flipper, Tuxedomoon, the Mutants and Linton Kwesi Johnson were only a few in the collection. Bands usually came by with their new single and it got added to the collection at one point or another. Let me know if you had your single in the box. I’ve bugged Joe for years look for the box of singles that got packed up after the SF earthquake.

So, back to cleaning the floor. It was usually caked with a brew of cigarettes, beer, gum and sweat. It was easy to sweep up the beer cans and bottles (at least those we didn’t break for recreation), but the coating of goo was a much tougher task. I remember the smell of the process as being a mixture of hexol and nicotine. God awful. Like being in that can of beer you just drank with the butt in it.

Hours after the task was accomplished, we’d cop some cheap Andre champagne and tuna sandwiches at the Asian liquor store on the corner of 18^th & South Van Ness. Or maybe we'd hit Whiz Burger. We’d settle in at the Target bar (situated at the entrance to the studio) before heading out into the city.

THE PLASTICS PARTY & TARGET BENEFIT SHOW

Back on Sunday, May 4, 1980, a benefit concert was held for Target at the Savoy Tivoli in SF. The Savoy was always one of my favorite venues. It was a great location to see Crime, the Offs, C'Est La Guerre and the always supportive Mutants. I did posters for the party and the benefit show that was put together to help with our legal bills/defense.

On a lowly Tuesday night (April 15) the Target was hosting the Japanese band, the Plastics, with an afterhours party. The Plastics were on tour in the US and had been in San Francisco for about a week. They'd opened for the Ramones and headlined at the Mab. During the afternoon we interviewed them, collaborating with Damage Magazine, out on the fire escape of the warehouse. My memory is that they didn't speak much English. There was a lot of buzz about them as Devo (who I knew from LA) were fans. This was a period when everyone, including Francis Ford Coppola, was interested in Japan. The Japanese were the cutting edge, particularly with video technology and all things electronic. Everyone was happy about hosting the band that night and glad to have bands showing up from that part of the world.

After the death of mayor Moscone at the hands of the assassin, Dan White, Diane Feinstein became mayor of San Francisco. Things changed almost overnight. The SF of the previous administration was gone, as were it's tolerant attitudes. The Feinstein administration generally sought to crack down on anything independent. So, what else for a new mayor to do on the night of the Plastics party but bust Target with a full on undercover, swat'ish invasion. In the end it was about selling beer without a license. Hey, we sold Buds for a buck. Oh, and I think "running a cabaret without a license."

Long story short, our friends came to our aid and we are forever grateful for that. And, it was a great show! Thanks to Vince Anton for a great photo of the bust.

Jackie here. I run the blog and decided to start posting stories about the scene and Target goings on back-in-the-day. Most of what I have to say is based on my memory, as well as calendars and diaries I kept at the time. If you want to add to the story be my guest and comment. Please don't rant if you don't like a band or club, etc. I just want to get some of the history out there for anyone who cares. On May 10, 1980, a Saturday night, Target had an after hours party at the warehouse following the PiL show at the South of Market Cultural Center. The Center was run by a group of Samoans who didn't give a hoot about Bill Graham. It was days of strong arming by promoters and confusion by fans. The show did go on!

Joe Rees produced striking and disparate bodies of punk rock video and neon sculpture in the 1970s and 1980s, which haven’t been seen for years; both will be on view at Steven Wolf Fine Arts this November.  Rees and the gallery have recreated a selection of his neon sculptures, almost all of which were lost in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and not seen since that time. Eerie, spare representations of chairs and tables, crucifixes and eye-glasses, the neon sculptures earned Rees a reputation for invention and craftsmanship and the San Francisco Art Association’s Adeline Kent Award in 1980. The economy of Rees’ forms, the way they seem to comment on minimalism, his mixture of glass with other materials such as wax, concrete and found objects, prophesied by decades work by other neon-centric artists, such as Ivan Navarro.  Even before the earthquake, Rees was lured away from his neon practice by the siren song of the portable video camera. He was one of the first artists in San Francisco to get one, and as the founder of Target Video he used it to document the punk rock scene like no one else. Some rare and obscure footage of studio mayhem from Target’s 18^th Street and South Van Ness headquarters, ground zero for the local punk scene, will be screened in the show along with better-known footage of performances by bands like The Cramps, The Germs and The Avengers.  In the 1980s, Rees traveled all over the U.S. and Europe screening punk rock shows, but he moved to Reno following the destruction of his studio and slipped into invisibility. Classics like The Cramps at Napa State Mental Hospital, an insane show in which it is at times difficult to distinguish between the band and the audience, were still in circulation. But the enormous archive, with footage like a deadpan concert by Crime at the San Quentin jail, in which band members dress up in sheriff’s outfits and performed for gun-toting prison guards, ethnically-divided prisoners and one brave go-go dancer, were completely out of sight. It’s only been recently that the Target Video archive has begun to find its way back into the spotlight. The Getty Museum included Rees in its 2008 survey, California Video, there was a massive outdoor show last year at MOCA Los Angeles and on February 18th and 20th Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will host a screening of SF punk rock shows and footage from Rees’ archive of Survival Research Laboratory shows.

Brendan Mullen R.I.P. October 12, 2008

We received the very sad news earlier today that our good friend, Brendan Mullen, passed away. Always a vociferous scene historian, Brendan was truly the "Mad Scot." He's known for his many, many contributions to L.A's music history, including founding the Masque, booking Club Lingerie, and as the chronicler of L.A. punk history in his various books.

He was also a drummer, recorded for posterity one day (or was it two?) at the Target studio on So. Van Ness. He was playing drums with Geza X and the Mommymen. Brendan and Geza were up for the weekend as was Don Bonebrake, who was up with X. They all played up a storm that day in the studio. We spent all day shooting the Mommymen. As evening fell we sped over to Berkeley to tape X.(The Mommymen opened.)Then it was back for more studio shooting. Those were the days (and nights.)

Brendan is missed by us all. Our heartfelt prayers and love go out to Kiteri and Brendan's family.

The upcoming Target Video show at the Silent Movie Theater will be quite a departure from past shows. Unlike other Target shows, this one basically presents footage direct from the vaults. Uncut. Unmixed. Raw and original. We have begun calling the show "Raw Power" for its sheer voyeuristic quality. The pieces document explosive musical events from the late 70's and early 80's. The soundtracks are all original: from a simple camera microphone recording to studio mixes. Presented more music tv style than movie. An authentic thrill ride through the West Coast's punk past. It's not pretty. It's raw and the way it was. Be there!

Thanks to everyone who came down to Geffen/MOCA on Saturday night! It was a great show that kicked off with 2 hours of great classics from back-in-the-day provided by Henry Rollins. It was cool to hear such clean versions of the music.

The crowd of 1200 was totally enthusiastic about the cavalcade of videos from Target that flowed for the next 2 hours. We'd love to hear from you which your favorites were. Well, we have an idea, but tell us anyway!

Don't know if anyone knew the shirts were for sale in the store. You can still pick one up.

Next show is at the Pacific Film Archive at the Berkeley Art Museum in Berkeley on Thursday, June 19. Be there!

Well, it was Jackie & Jill's birthdays...Joe was in town...friends were in LA for the Getty show party...so hell, "Let's have a little Target Party!" While it could never match the huge parties of the past, it was really great and we all had a blast. Flipper was in town for the Getty show and their gigs at the House of Blues. Penelope Houston decided to stay over for the party too. We were so glad she did! March 13, 2008: The Getty opening for the "California Video" show was a total blast. So many old friends turned up for the festivities. Not everyone made the photo...missing in action was Bruce Loose who was downstairs doing God knows what. The show is brilliant. It really is quite a feat of art and electronics. Get yourselves over/up to the Getty Center and check it out. The show runs through June 8.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Target will be showing a full program at the Geffen/MOCA in Japantown on June 7, 2008. No reservations necessary. It will be a fun night of video outside (projected on a big wall) and a party atmosphere. Be there!

The Flipper DVD is coming. We are in the final stages of band approval. Hopefully Flipper will be prompt....er, not their forte. The DVD will include never released video footage of "The Wheel" .... Will Shatter and Denny Boredom (the Offs, True Believers, Jorma Kaukonen) on vocals. We swear it'll be soon....

Dirk Dirksen RIP

It's very sad news that Dirk Dirksen passed away a few days ago. He was great man who gave everyone a really,really,really hard time because he liked them so much. Underneath it all he was a sweetheart. He will be remembered fondly and missed by us all.
